Susan Hayre

For 16 years she worked as curator of and advisor to one of the most comprehensive photographic collections in America. The relationship with the collector began at the Dreyfus Corporation where the CEO and Chairman, hired her to buy, commission, and hang photographs throughout the four floors of the Met Life Building. After his retirement, she helped him create one of the great private photographic collections.

She has published five books on photography and co-curated a number of exhibitions. For a private collector, she co-created a collection called Hope Photographs, which has been traveling the country for the last eight years. A book of the same name was published by Thames and Hudson. She authored 25 and Under/Photographers and was curator of that traveling exhibit. As one of the four founders of Here Is New York: A Democracy of Photographs, she helped to create one of the most remarkable tributes to the people and events of September 11, 2001.

In September 2006, “The Office/In and Out of the Box” opened at the Dorsky Gallery in Long Island City, an exhibit she co-curated. Also, she worked with two other curators of a yearlong series of exhibitions at the Japan Society in New York on new work from Asian artists.

Starting at Time Magazine, throughout the years, she has been photography director of many magazines, among them: GEO, Fortune, DoubleTake, Granta, and Details, as well as serving as consultant for others. She has been the Director of Magnum New York and the Publisher of Granta in England.  She serves on several international juries and foundations. She created a series of art books for the Italian publisher Damiani.
